Meet Mel -Founder of S.T.A.R.T

Hi, I’m Mel, the principal practitioner at S.T.A.R.T. I’m a Mental Health Social Worker with over 30 years of experience in the Social Services sector. I'm passionate about social justice and have always prioritised grassroots work.

I have experience working with diverse communities on a wide range of issues, but my core focus has been with:

  • Youth

  • Aboriginal and /Torres Strait Islander peoples

  • Individuals affected by Domestic and Family Violence

I’ve supported people facing challenges such as:

  • Homelessness

  • Substance misuse

  • Cognitive and mental health issues

  • Navigating statutory systems (e.g., Youth Justice, Corrections, Child Safety)

In the last 15 years, I’ve served as Clinical Lead at YETI (Youth Empowered Towards Independence) and as a Counsellor for Apunipima, primarily in Aurukun. These roles demanded strong theoretical knowledge in systems, advocacy, and psychological strategies, as well as a collaborative, mentoring approach.

More recently, I’ve been working across Australia as a Therapist, blending professional expertise with the wisdom of lived experience. I am deeply grateful for the clients and colleagues who have welcomed me into their journeys—and I would be honoured to work alongside you, in whatever capacity best supports your needs.
